We had a great time at Summit this year. Paul Cole challenged students to think of their futures and how God seems to want us to try and fail more than he wants us to sit and wait. Ben, Jeff, Brendan, Austin, and Aaron had a great time worrying about Jason Vorhees, trying not to take cold showers, fighting in the snow, playing games, and reconnecting to God.

Well I know this post is a bit late for year end listings but I don't really care. (Also these are not books that were released this year but my favorite books that i read this year.)

5. Pocket Guide to the Apocalypse by Jason Boyett
This book is for those of us who are interested in the end times but maybe get confused by all the charts and references and weirdos on the internet who claim that Mr. Rogers is the antichrist. This book gives us a good reference for end times buzz words in its "apocalyptionary" and has a handy listing of previous end of the world predictions that didn't come true. One group forecasted the end about 7 times in the last 100 years.

4. Out of the Silend Planet by C.S. Lewis
This is the first in Lewis' science fiction series. It chronicles (pun) the adventures of a Dr. Ransom as he travels to another planet. The book is interesting because it theorizes what would have happened if life on other planets existed and never experienced the fall. The nobility of the creatures on the foreign planet and the fear and emotion Ransom experiences makes this book incredibly cool and interesting to read.

3. Confessions of a Reformission Rev. by Mark Driscoll
Driscoll is one of the most outspoken leaders of the new emergent church. This book tells us about the issues and hardships Driscoll faced in growing his church in Seattle. Not exactly entertaining to those who are not in ministry, but very interesting to those who feel called to accomplish something for God. Driscoll is so real it hurts sometimes but your faith is refreshed by the end.

2. Tired of Do-List Christianity by Scott Morton
This book offers really short chapters on certain misconceptions about Christianity. Most of the time you will say, "duh, everyone knows that." While other times his perspective will completely change your idea of what Christianity can be. A short and easy read, but chock full of delicious Christian goodness.

1. A Generous Orthodoxy by Brian McLaren
If you have ever read anything by McLaren, you know that he can be strange and wise and weird and possibly sacriligeous and cool and old and young and everything in between. This book seems to capture McLaren's theology better than anything else. A leader in emergent and eccumenica circles, McLaren makes the case for reconnecting everything Christianity can ever be or has ever been. (Just look at the front cover) McLaren flips Christianty on its head and really tries to get to what Christianity is about, in spirit and in truth. While I may take some issue with the author, it is absolutely worth the read.

Mark 12:28-43 Gems from Mark

We learn 3 valuable things from this section of Scripture.

First, verses 30 - 31. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these."

Second, verses 38 - 40 warn us of people who appear righteous and love the respect of others but hurt others to get ahead. Jesus says "Such men will be punished severely."

Third, verses 41-43 tells of the widow who gave until it hurt. She was generous with all that she had not just the things she could do without.

3 questions? Are you loving God and others as hard as you can? Are you being a hypocrite with your faith? Are you giving until it hurts?

Mark 12:18-27 (1 wife/7brothers)

1 Wife. 7 Brothers. That is the problem posed by the Sadducees to Jesus. They told Him of a woman who was married 7 times to 7 brothers because they all died. The Saducees asked Jesus, "Which one of the 7 brothers would the woman be married to after the resurrection?" Jesus basically told the Saducees that they were dumb and proceeded to wail on these guys intellectually. First Jesus said that their idea of the resurrection and the after life were messed up. Jesus tells us that no one will be married in the afterlife. Why not? I really like my wife! First there is no need for procreating which can be part of marriage. Secondly the oneness that spouses enjoy will be fulfilled by God not by another person. Its not that marriage isnt good, its that oneness with God is even better.

The real issue here is that the Sadducees didn't even believe in the resurrection of the dead. They were hoping to trap Jesus by the question. SO what does Jesus say?

Jesus then says that they do not even understand Scripture or God. Jesus says that when God spoke to Moses in the burning bush He said, "I am the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob." Jesus points out the difference in wording between "I am" and "I was." God is not the God of the dead but of the living. Remember: 1. We need to know our scripture so that we can speak about it intelligently and not appear like the Sadducees. 2. God is the God of the living not the dead.

The Huge Mark Post

The Underground has been working on the book of Mark for about a month now. On Wednesday we finished Mark chapter 6 which is a humongous chapter. It details Jesus being unable to do anything large in His hometown, Jesus sending out the disciples as his missionaries to Israel, the death of John the Baptist and the circumstances surrounding his death, Jesus seeking alone time with his disciples when they returned, Jesus feeding the 5000, Jesus walks on water, and Jesus heals many more people. As you can see there is a lot to deal with in Mark 6.

One of the things we have been emphasizing in Mark is the fact that Mark paints a picture of who Jesus really is. Mark has been called Peter's gospel, because it is believed that he told it to Mark who wrote it down. Peter really wants his readers to understand who Jesus is. He does this through a series of stories that show Jesus as the master of certain things. Mark 1-6 tells us that Jesus is master of demons, illness, sin, the sabbath, satan, death, and nature. Jesus performs miracles that show this mastery.

Some other things that we are trying to find in Mark are key words. Peter and Mark present Jesus as a kind of action hero, the Vin Diesel of the holy land you could say. They do this through the use of certain words. Mark loves the words "Immediately," "Amazed," and the word "and." Jesus does something and Immediately he moves on to the next thing. Most of Mark is a giant run-on sentence using the word "and" to tie it together. We get this kind of breathless, what can't Jesus do, feeling from Mark. The other key word is "amazed." Mark and Peter want us to know that the things that Jesus did were so awesome that even the disciples didn't get it. They were constantly "amazed."

So, at our last meeting we talked about how Jesus fed the 5000. (Which was only the number of men. If we count women and children, it becomes about 15000.) This was a big deal. This is the only miracle mentioned in all 4 of the gospels. The students and I discussed how the disciples and Jesus had different reactions to the need and to the resources that they found. The disciples wanted to send the people away, Jesus wanted the disciples to take care of the people. The disciples thought that the 5 loaves and 2 fish were worthless, Jesus said what we have is enough. God asks us to take care of others regardless of what we have. Many of us believe that the gifts we have are worthless when we see the need. We repeat what the disciples said, "Even if we worked for 8 months, we couldn't make a dent." God does not call us to take care of everyone all the time, but He does call us to help when and where we can with whatever He has given to us. Mother Teresa said that "God does not call us to be successful, He calls us to be faithful."

Use your time with God to ask Him to provide opportunities for you to be faithful to Him and His plan.

Parents, if you ever get the chance ask your student to tell you something about Mark. I bet you will be surprised at the knowledge they have gained from this incredible book.
